This page is dedicated to Rev. Earl H. Merritt. He has always been one of the wisest men that I have ever known. He is probrably the most responsible for me being in the ministry and I can not tell you how much influence that this man has had on my life and that of my family. I hope that you like these quotes. You can learn from some, and some are meant to be humerous. You may love some and hate others, but I believe they are all good. There should be something here for everyone. - Brother Hugh

Learn to take advice. There are only two kinds of advice. The kind you need and the kind you don't need.
We should know the word because someday we will be judged by it.
The Bible is not a textbook but a handbook
The Bible is a treasure chest, but not many people dig down deep into it to get the real treasures.
A well-used Bible that is falling apart usally belongs to a person who isn't.
Do you love your Bible or what's in it?
The attitude of the preacher may change, the attitude of the listner may change, and the circumstances may change, but the word of God will never change.
Most Christians read just enough of the Bible to make themselves miserible.
More than a dead letter.
The Bible is like a telescope. If a man looks through his telescope, then he sees worlds beyond; but if he looks at his telescope, then he does not see anything but that. The Bible is a thing to be looked through, to see that which is beyond; but most people only look at it; and so they see only a dead letter. - Phillip Brooks
I thorrougly believe in a university education for both men and women; but I believe a knowledge of the Bible without a college course is more valuable than a college course without the Bible. - William Lyon Phelps
THE ANVIL
Last eve I passed beside a blacksmith's door, and heard the anvil ring the vesper chime; Then looking in, I saw upon the floor old hammers, worn with beating years of time. "How many anvils have you had" I said "To wear and batter all these hammers so?"
"Just one" said he, and then with twinkling eye, "The anvil wears the hammers out, you know." And so, thought I, The anvil of Gods Word. For ages skeptic blows have beat upon; Yet though the noise of falling blows was heard, The anvil is unharmed...the hammers gone.
It is not what he has, nor even what he does, which directly expresses the worth of a man, but what he is. - Henri Frederic Amiel
The measure of a mans real character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out. - Thomas MacAulay
Good habits are not made on birthdays, nor Christian character at the new year. The workshop of character is everyday life. The uneventful and commonplace hour is where the batle is lost or won. - Maltbie D. Babcock
As the tree falls, so shall it lie. - Rev Clayton Baker
REPUTATION AND CHARACTER
The circumstances amid which you live determine your reputation; the truth you believe determines your character.
Reputation is what you are supposed to be; charaacter is what you are.
Reputation is the photograph; character is the face.
Reputation comes over one from without; character grows up from within.
Reputation is what you have when you come to a new comunity; character is what you have when you go away.
Your reputation is learned in an hour; your character is built in a lifetime.
Reputation grows like a mushroom; character grows like the oak.
A single newspaper report gives you your reputation, a life of toil gives you your character.
Reputation makes you rich or makes you poor; character makes you happy or makes you miserable.
Reputation is what men say about you on your tombstone; character is what the angels say about you before the throne of God. - William Hersey Davis
Character is what you are in the dark. - D.L. Moody
We tried so hard to make things better for our kids that we made them
worse. For my grandchildren, I'd like better. I'd really like for them to
know about hand me down clothes and homemade ice cream and leftover meat
loaf sandwiches. I really would.
I hope you learn humility by being humiliated, and that you learn honesty
by being cheated. I hope you learn to make your own bed and mow the lawn
and wash the car. And I really hope nobody gives you a brand new car when
you are sixteen.
It will be good if at least one time you can see puppies born and your old
dog put to sleep. I hope you get a black eye fighting for something you
believe in, I hope you have to share a bedroom with your younger brother.
And it's all right if you have to draw a line down the middle of the room,
but when he wants to crawl under the covers with you because he's scared,
I hope you let him.
When you want to see a movie and your little brother wants to tag along, I
hope you'll let him. I hope you have to walk uphill to school with your
friends and that you live in a town where you can do it safely. On rainy
days when you have to catch a ride, I hope you don't ask your driver to
drop you two blocks from school so you won't be seen with someone as uncool
as your Mom.
If you want a slingshot, I hope your Dad teaches you how to make one
instead of buying one. I hope you learn to dig in the dirt and read books.
When you learn to use computers, I hope you also learn to add and subtract
in your head. I hope you get teased by your friends when you have your
first crush on a girl, and when you talk back to your mother that you learn
what ivory soap tastes like.
May you skin your knee climbing a mountain, burn your hand on a stove and
stick your tongue on a frozen flagpole. I don't care if you try a beer
once, but I hope you don't like it. And if a friend offers you dope or a
joint, I hope you realize he is not your friend.
I sure hope you make time to sit on a porch with your Grandpa and go
fishing with your Uncle. May you feel sorrow at a funeral and joy during
the holidays. I hope your mother punishes you when you throw a baseball
through your neighbor's window and that she hugs you and kisses you at
Christmas time when you give her a plaster mold of your hand.
These things I wish for you-tough times and disappointment, hard times and
happiness. To me, its the only way to appreciate life. - Paul Harvey

You should remember that though another may have more money, beauty, and brains than you, yet when it comes to the rarer spiritual values such as charity, self-sacrifice, honor, nobility of heart, you have an equal chance with everyone to be the most beloved and honored of all people. - Archibald Rutledge
I do not ask to walk smooth paths,
Nor bear an easy load.
I pray for strength and fortitude,
To climb the rock-strewn road.
Give me such courage I can scale
The hardest peaks alone.
And transform every stumbling block,
Into a Stepping Stone.
Gail Brook Burket
A Pessimist is someone who, when he sees the light at the end of the tunnel, thinks that it's a train comming to run him over.
WHAT DISTURBED YOU MOST IN 2005?
What disturbed you the most? A lost soul in Hell, or a scratch on that car. Your missing the worship service or missing a days work. The church not growing very fast or the garden not growing. Your Bible unopened, or a newspaper unread. The contributions decreasing or your income decreasing. Your children late to Bible study or late to public school. Your church work neglected or your housework neglected. To miss Bible class or to miss your favorite TV program. Low attendance at worship or low attendance at a party. Now how about 2006?

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change...Courage to change the things I can and wisdom to know the difference. - Kristone
A Christian without a church home is like a fish out of water
Going to church won't make you a Christian any more that going to a garage will make you a mechanic.
Some people go to church because they think they are better than others and some go because they think that they are worse than others. Why do you go to church?
Our lives are like great power lines. No matter how taught they are stretched, if there is not a standard to lift them up at intervals, those power lines will finally lie in the dust of the ground. - Rev. W. A. Criswell

The resistance of a woman is not always a proof of her virtue more frequently of her experience. - Ninon de Lenclos
We should be careful to get out of an experience only the wisdom that was in it--and stop there, lest we be like the cat that sits on a hot stove lid. She will never sit down on a hot stove lid again, and that is well, but also she will never sit down on a cold one anymore. - Mark Twain
One thing about the school of experience is that it will repeat the lesson if you flunk the first time.

Whoever it was who searched the heavens with a telescope and found no God would not have found the juman mind if he had searched the brain with a microscope. - George Santayana
We convince ourselves that life will be better after we get married, have a
baby, then another. Then we are frustrated that the kids aren't old enough
and we'll be more content when they are. After that, we're frustrated that
we have teenagers to deal with. We will certainly be happy when they are out
of that stage. We tell ourselves that our life will be complete when spouse
gets his or her act together, when we get a nicer car, are we able to go on
a nice vacation, or when we retire. The truth is, there's no better time to
be happy than right now. If not now, when? Your life will always be filled
with challenges.
What makes us so bitter against people who outwit us is that they think themselves cleverer than we are. - Francios de LaRochefoucauld
It's best to admit this to yourself and decide to be happy anyway.
Happiness is the way. So, treasure every moment that you have and treasure
it more because you shared it with someone special, special enough to spend
your time with...and remember that time waits for no one.
So, stop waiting....
--until your car or home is paid off
--until you get a new car or home
--until your kids leave the house
--until you go back to school
--until you finish school
--until you lose 10 lb.
--until you gain 10 lb.
--until you get married
--until you get a divorce
--until you have kids
--until you retire
--until summer
--until spring
--until winter
--until fall
--until you die
There is no better time than right now to be happy. Happiness is a
Journey,
not a destination. So -- work like you don't need money, Love like you've
never been hurt, and dance like no one's watching.
The happiness of a person is directly linked to the most important thing in his life.
Happiness often sneaks in through a door you didn't know you left open.

Many people who plan to repent at the 11th hour die at 10:30.
It would be far better to go to Hell from the Jungles of the Ammazon where they never had a missionary than from the front seat of a Bible believing church. - Pastor Harold Ramsey
A Naval chaplin who didn't believe in Hell was asked to resign. When he asked why the Christians told him there were two reasons. If there is a Hell, we don't want you lying to us, second if there is no Hell, we don't need you.

A man has made at least a start on discovering the meaning of human life when he plants shade trees under which he knows full well he will never sit. - Elton Trueblood
If we want the advantages of love, then we must be willing to take the risks of love. And that requires vunerability. Of course, we can refuse this path and trod another one devoid of openness. But the toll on such a road is extremely high. - Rev. Chuck Swindoll
Man begins by making love and ends by loving a woman; woman begins by loving a man and ends by loving love. - Reme de Gourmont

There is one advantage in a plurality of wives; they fight each other instead of their husbands. - Josh Billings
Since all the maids are good and lovable, from whence come evil wives. - Charles Lamb
Perhaps determination not to give up trusts many marriages through to survival. Determination could be just another name for stubbornness or for dependence. I think it could also be another name for commitment, even for love. It surely is acknowledgement that "for better or worse" includes worse, something the old marriage has learned it must abide. Without that worse, the marriage, like the phrase, is incomplete. I suspect it is also considerably less interesting. - Joyce Colony
A woman must choose: with a man liked by women, she is not sure; with a man disliked by women, she is not happy. - Anatole France
Being taken for granted can be a compliment. It means that you've become a comfortable, trustes element in another persons life. - Dr. Joyce Brothers
A wedding is an event, but a marriage is an achievement. - In Tune with Father(Soumi College)
So you say you can't take it, the price is too high. The feelings are gone it seems the rivers run dry. You never imagined it could turn out so rough. You give and give and give and still it's never enough. Your emotions have vanished that once held a thrill, you wonder if love could be alive in you still. But that ring on your finger was put there to stay, you'll never forget the words you promised that day. Jesus didn't die for you because it was fun, He hung there for love because it had to be done, and inspite of the anguish his word was fulfilled, cause love is not a feeling it's an act of your will. - Don Francisco
Success in marriage is much more than a matter of finding the right person; it is also a matter of being the right person. - Leland Foster Wood
One good husband is worth two good wives; for the scarcer things are, the more they're valued. - Benjamin Franklin
What hurts you is not the fight, its what you say after the fight.
I consider my ability to arouse enthusiam among the men, the greatest asset I posses, and the way to develop the best that is in a man is by appreciation and encouragement. There is nothing else that so kills the ambitions of a man as criticisms from his superiors. I never criticize anyone. I believe in giving a man incentive to work. In my wide association in life, meeting with many and great men in various parts of the world, I have yet to find the man, however great or exalted his station, who did not do better work and put forth greater effort under a spirit of approval than he would ever do under a spirt of critism. - Charles Schwab
Action springs out of what we fundamentally desire...and the best piece of advice which can be given to would be persuaders, whether in bussiness, in the home, in the school, in politics is first arouse in the other person an eager want. God is more interested in the quality of the prayer than the quantity and eloquence of the words.
Prayer is the key to Heaven, but faith unlocks the door.
Sometimes when God wants to punish us, He answers our prayers.
Do not pray for easy lives; pray to be stronger men. Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers;pray for powers equal to your tasks. Then the doing of your work shall be no miracle, but you shall be a miracle. Success does not necessarily mean that we must earn a great deal of money and live in the biggest house in town. It means only that we are daily engaged in striving toward a goal that we have indepently chosen and feel is worthy of us as persons. A goal, whatever it may be, is what gives meaning to our existance. You will never be higher or better than your best thoughts. - Jack Lannom
You are what you think you are, attitudes determine actions. You look at a person and how they behave, I can tell you how they think. You see a man going in to a pornography shop and I can tell you pretty much what's going on in his mind. Ask a man if you can see his library and you can tell him what he thinks, by looking at his library. Watching what a man does you can tell pretty much what he thinks because the culmazation, the crystalization, the selitification in thoughts is your behaviour. - Jack Lannom

Lessons of an oyster
The most extraordinary thing about the oyster is this. Irritations get into his shell. He does not like them. But when he can not get rid of them, he uses the irritation to do the loveliest thing an oyster ever has a chance to do.
If there are irritations in our lives today, there is only one perscription: make a peral. It may have to be a peral of patience, but, anyhow, make a peral. And it takes faith and love to do it. - Harry Emerson Fosdick

I go fishing up in Main every Summer. Personally I am very fond of strawberries and cream; but I find for some strange reason fish prefer worms. So when I go fishing, I don't think about what I want. I think about what they want. I don't bait the hook with strawberries and cream. Rather, I dangle a worm or a grasshopper in front of the fish and say:"Wouldn't you like to have that?"Why not use the same common sense when fishing for men? - Dale Carnigie

Look for more Trouble
Be thankful for the troubles of your job. They provide about half of your income. Because if it were not for the things that go wrong, the difficult people you have to deal with, and the problems and unpleasantness of our working day, someone could be found to handle your job for half of what you are being paid.
It takes intelligence, resourcefulness, patience, tact and courage to meet the troubles of any job. That is why you hold your present job. And it may be the reason you aren't holding down an even bigger one.
If all of us would start to look for more troubles, and learn to handle them cheerfully and with good judgements, as opportunities rather than irritations, we would find ourselves getting ahead at a suprising rate. For it is a fact that there are plenty of big jobs waiting for men and women who aren't afraid of the troubles connected with them. - Robert R. Updegraff
